Text and Textures with Peter Thornton
April 9 & 10, Saturday & Sunday
9 a.m.-4 p.m.
$100 PSC members, $125 non-members (includes materials fee)
Location: TBA

The element of Texture is well known in Food, Music, Touch, Architecture
etc and it is equally important in our world of Calligraphy to create
both visual interest and to clarify the different areas of texts.
In this worshop we shall examine in a gentle and logical manner a
'method of study' that will help us to understand the four or five
basic elements needed to produce calligraphic textures that will be
both useful AND visually exciting, thus avoiding the trap of habit
and the strategy of hope.
Beginning with the humble pencil in many exercises and projects, using
both Caps and/ or Italic (or 'hand' of your choice), we shall produce
a wide range of Textures, from the dynamic to the subtle, from the
Formal and 'safe' to the Unexpected and 'risky' and learn ways to combine
them to their best advantage. Many of these will be repeated with both
pointed, broad edged and the rebel *Folded Ruling pen and brought to
a conclusion in the production of a small 'sampler' book that will
be a useful reminder of the worshop and the 'methods' etc.
A feature of the worshop on day 2 will be an overview of some aspects
on Contemporary Layout and Design to help students in this oft thought
difficult area of our craft.
The workshop is open to ALL levels of ability and optimism from the
nervous beginner to the outrageously over confident!
