Versals, Pastels… then GOLD with Colleen Cavin
Thursday, June 11 & Friday, June 12, 2009 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Location: TBA
$100 (materials fee included) PSC members
$125 non-members (includes
$25 membership; please include a completed membership
form when registering)
Day
One: Versals
Using a pencil and then pen, we will begin
the versal letter. We will gain confidence and competence, the ability
to draw the same strokes, the same force, the same trueness, and the
same tenderness. This we all can do, this is ordinary, this is usual,
and this is craftsmanship.
Supplies: 2H, HB, 2B pencils, a few pieces 11 x 17 bond paper and
good paper, favorite flexible nibs (Speedball C-2, C-4; Mitchell roundhand
3» 5) gouache (any color you like and are comfortable writing
with) and mixing paraphernalia, ink. And WORDS.
Day Two: Gold
23k Gold makes a fine background. Instead of the
temperamental sparkle-y gold on gesso as the main event, we will be
using gold (adhered to a surface with oil pastel) as a background in
which to scratch our designs. Those designs may be versal letters from
the previous day or anything else.
Supplies: 2H, HB, 2B pencils, tracing paper, oil pastel set (must
be oil and can be cheap) small soft rags (old sock, tee shirt, hankie),
bone folder or Teflon folder, triangle scratching nib, stiff pointed
nib, bits of good paper. A $35 materials fee, which is already included
in the cost, covers 12 sheets of gold each, and small boards stretched
with parchment and paper, and other sundry supplies.
About the instructor: A calligrapher, book artist and Fulbright Scholar,
Colleen has over 15 years experience teaching calligraphy and book
binding to children and adults. She has taught for Pacific Northwest
College of Art, Oregon College of Arts and Crafts and Portland Community
College. Currently, Colleen serves as a contract art teacher for Multnomah
County. |
