Elucidare is a Greek word meaning “completely bright and clear;
from lucere: to shine.” How does the interplay of writing and
painting make the message of the text shine? When do letters dance,
and word and image create the perfect balance on a broadside or on
the pages of a book?
The transformation of ideas into material form is the universal challenge
to visual artists, and the balance of image and text present a distinct
challenge to the lettering artist and to book artists. We will experiment
with the concepts and techniques of lettering, painting and design
to present a prose textchosen from one of three themes: the natural
world, creativity / creative process, or a passage from a spiritual
text. Each student will create a page-spread for a future book, designed,
lettered and painted to render, clarify and elucidate the chosen text.
Students are asked to complete a pre-class exploratory lettering assignment.
Day one will focus on the texture, pattern and rhythm and form in expressive
and textural lettering, with critique of pre-class work. Illustration
/ painting techniques will be the focus of day two, and throughout
the weekend, we will discuss, explore and apply the principles of balance,
scale, color palette and techniques leading to the best final design.
Students will take away illuminating ways of thinking about and working
with text and imagery to create 2D and book work that makes the message
shine.
