1: Parallel Pen Empowerment for Beginners and Experts!
Use this sharp and convenient pen for fun AND professional work. Explore
color blending, hairlines, texture and nonstop flourishing. We'll load
these pens with gouache, acrylic inks, glue and more! BRING any Parallel
Pens & their color cartridges you already own, 12-20 sheets of
any practice paper 11x14 or larger and the Parallel Pen Wizardry Book
if you have one. ALSO -- a tube of gouache or watercolor (any color),
mixing pan & brush, water container, eyedropper or pipette, 2-3
paper towels and a spray bottle of glass cleaner (any brand) if one
is handy; we will share. Parallel pens will be available for loan during
class if you don't have one. Acrylic ink if you already have it. If
your Parallel Pens are empty, bring them to class empty. Pens with
problems welcomed. Learn to DISassemble the pen, clean it properly,
and REassemble it.

Part 2: Tool Time with Brenda
Bring your tool & supply dilemmas for an afternoon of fun and exploration!
A series of "try-it-here" stations and demos will make it easy
for you to discover new tools and materials and become acquainted with
some unusual ones. As time allows we'll tour new supplies like Holbein's
new brilliant gold and silver gouaches, Twinkling H2Os, Duo Embellishing
Adhesive, new color brushes, woodless colored pencils from the Czech
Republic, Moon Palace Sumi, Glaze and Soufflé Gelly Roll pens.
The tool tour may include the Ruling Writer, folded pens, GTech micron
style pens, Horizon brass pens, walnut & iridescent ink tricks, peerless
watercolors, waterbrushes, new colorbrushes, phantom liners, lining guides,
center guides, magnifying visors, the hot foil pen, adjustable oblique
holders, Japanese screw punches. We'll talk about "the right tool
for the job," including basic ink and paper quandaries. Most of
these items along with many new books will be available for purchase
in our special Paper & Ink store throughout the day on Saturday,
April 29!

About the
instructor: With the help of a mighty but tiny staff,
Brenda Broadbent operates Paper
& Ink Arts, a catalog supply source for art supplies, books
and gifts for calligraphers, from a little town in mid Maryland.
Twenty-five years ago, Brenda began Paper & Ink with a partner
while working as a librarian in a large suburban library system.
In an even earlier incarnation, she worked as a high school English
teacher, developing skills that still serve her well. She has studied
with Reggie Ezell and Louise Megginson. She and her daughter Jane
are delighted to visit Portland again on their way to Letters of
Joy and look forward to the drive up the coast
