We are contemplating bringing back a "paper newsletter." We do have a committee assembling but we truly need folks who love to write and would be willing to compose articles on workshops and other fascinating gems that occur in our
world of calligraphy. Most of all, we need someone computer-savvy to put it all together. We would send them out quarterly...including tips/tricks of the trade, columns from our local teachers...sign up sheets for workshops.....etc etc.
Please let Mary Ann David know if you would be interested in being a part of this venture. We had newsletters for PSC for years and years!

All PSC Members with dues paid as of April of 2011 are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship, which represents a large portion of the fees, for the Calligraphy Northwest International Calligraphy Conference, June 24 - July 1, 2012 sponsored by the Portland Society for Calligraphy.

Applicants should have some calligraphic knowledge/experience, have completed High School (or the equivalent) and be at least 18 years of age at the time of the conference. This is a scholarship opportunity, not a juried competition. Applicants of all skill levels will be considered equally.

The grant will be used as partial tuition for the conference. This is a unique opportunity to study calligraphy and related book arts with master instructors. SCRIBEscholars will live in campus dormitories, gather for meals and enjoy evening programs.

The scholarship is non-transferable: If the recipient is unable to attend, the award is forfeited and any credits received must immediately be returned to the Conference Chairs, Meri Taylor or Carol DuBosch, for the Scholarship Committee to allocate. Total cost for the conference will be approximately $1350; recipients are responsible for additional costs above the $1000 award.

Application must be completed and mailed by December 1, 2011.

Thought this upcoming event at Portland Center Stage might interest you: "The History of Letterforms, from beginning to FUTURA" by Portland calligrapher and typography professor, Elizabeth Anderson. Free, but registration required.

This information is from their blog:

"In PCS’s (Portland Center Stage) production of FUTURA, we witness typography professor and librarian Lorraine Wexler give a lesson on the history of fonts in a future where the art of pen on paper has all but disappeared. What is awesome is that Elizabeth Anderson, from one of our generous show sponsors Anderson Kreiger, taught typography at PSU. Further crazy coincidence is that Anderson Kreiger designed the lettering for the Gerding Theater using, get this--Futura font!

The Education & Community Programs department invites you to join real life typography professor and designer, Elizabeth Anderson, in a demonstration on the history of western letterforms from the first time man produced a representative character to present day when computers have all but taken over the art of writing.

Make an afternoon of it and attend the 2pm matinee immediately following.

Sunday, March 6, 12:30-1:30pm – FREE at The Gerding Theater

Please call Sarah Mitchell at 503-445-3795 to register, or email her at sarahm@pcs.org"

Sr. Corita Kent Art Exhibit set for Feb. 14 through March 10

"A Jubilee for Corita" exhibit is set for February 14 through March 10 in the Buckley Center Gallery on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. The exhibit is free and open to the public. A reception is set for 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 in the gallery.

Sr. Corita Kent, IHM, created the serigraph "YOBEL" – Hebrew for "Jubilee" – in 1963 to celebrate her 25th Jubilee as a religious. “YOBEL” was chosen as the centerpiece of this exhibit to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Corita's death.

In the 1950s, when "Catholic art" consisted of idealized portraits of Jesus and the Holy Family, Corita favored the stronger forms found in Medieval art. In the mid-1960s, her work transitioned to the vibrant and provocative Pop art associated with her today. Corita’s art showed the undeniable influence of an era that included the civil rights and the Vietnam War and created messages that read as spiritual directives. Her design for the 1985 U.S. Postal Service's "Love" postage stamp became the most popular stamp issue in United States postal history.

Although the look of Corita's art changed significantly over the years, her message remained the same – the gospel imperative of love and care, one for another, throughout the world.

A documentary of her life, called "Primary Colors: The Story of Corita," is set to run on Oregon Public Broadcasting on Feb. 23.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, please contact the Garaventa Center at (503) 943-7702 or at powell@up.edu.

The show features the works of 18 well-known artists as eclectic as they are talented. In Art Lexicon the artist were asked to "Play with Words" and mix the metaphors as well as their mediums.

Letters, text and script flow in oils, acrylics, pastel, and ink. The graceful curves of Arabic and Chinese calligraphy juxtaposed with the bold lines and sharp edges of the Roman alphabet in a sophisticated interaction of style, medium and cultural influence."

Barbara Getty took part in an interview on the September 03, 2009 Colin McEnroe radio program based in Hartford, Connecticut. Rather a crazy setting -- but eventually handwriting comes up a few minutes into the program, and Barbara has a chance to voice her opinion from time to time about halfway through.

The invitation was prompted by the 'official' guest, Kitty Burns Florey, who has written Script & Scribble, the Rise and Fall of Handwriting, and who kindly included Inga and Barbara in her volume that published January 2009.

Inga & Barbara also have an article in the September 8, 2009 issue of the New York Times. Inga did all the handwriting examples!

Longtime PSC member and internationally known calligraphy instructor Cliff Mansley is presenting a "One Man Show" at the Lakewood Center for the Arts beginning March 2nd and lasting through the middle of April. The show includes more than 22 framed pieces. The exhibit is in the entrance area.

Lakewood Center for the Arts
368 S. State Street
Lake Oswego, OR 97034
Open Weekdays 9-5, Saturday 10-4

Cliff Mansley began his adventures in Calligraphy shortly after being discharged from the United States Navy following the Second World War. Between discharge and entering the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania he spent several months at the Zanerian College of Penmanship, in Columbus Ohio. There he studied three basic hands: Old English (also known as Gothic or Black Letter), Engrosser’s Text (an informal broad pen text) and Copperplate Script (also known as English Roundhand and Engravers Script). For years calligraphy was both a hobby and an avocation.

He and his wife Jean, a commercial artist, conducted the avocation under the name, Heirloom Artists. In 1986 they entered the Calligraphy field in earnest and have conducted a thriving business in calligraphy to the present time (Cliff and Jean’s daughter, Holly Monroe is a world class calligrapher in Cincinnati, Ohio.) Although Cliff is adept in a dozen calligraphic styles, Copperplate Script is his favorite style for teaching and conducting workshops.

Currently, Cliff serves as a board member for the Association for Calligraphic Arts, ACA.

All-Oregon Art Annual 2008

All Oregon artists and calligraphers are invited to submit artwork to the All-Oregon Art Annual, which is held in conjunction with the Oregon State Fair. This annual exhibit promotes, encourages, and supports Oregon artists in all media. The calligraphy division consists of juried, non-juried and a student category.

The juried exhibition showcases professional quality work being produced by Oregon calligraphers and increases public awareness of calligraphy as fine art. The non-juried exhibition supports and encourages developing calligraphers and students of all ages and provides them with an opportunity to display their artwork.

All entry information will only be available online this year at http://www.oregonstatefair.org/

This year’s All-Oregon Art Annual is again located in the Jackman-Long Building that is centrally situated on the State Fairgrounds in Salem. Our popular artist reception will be held Thursday, August 21st from 7-9 PM. Award winners will be announced that evening at 8 PM. The Fair will run from Friday, Aug. 22nd-Monday, Sept. 1st this year.

Delivery of artwork will be on Sat. Aug. 9th, 9 AM-6 PM and on Sunday, Aug. 10th from noon-4 PM. I'm adding a new feature this year and I hope it will entice more calligraphers to enter. My mom, Opal Thomas, will accept entries at her home in SE Portland from July 23- Aug. 6th. All work needs to be wrapped for transporting with completed entries attached. I'll drive up on the 7th or 8th and will pick them up to be entered in the Fair. I'll also collect them on Sept. 2nd on pick up day and return them to Portland that week to my mom's house. The entry MUST be clearly marked with that preference. Entrants can arrange for collection from Sept. 3-10th. How's that for a sweet deal? Please help spread the word and encourage your members to participate. (Contact me for Mom's address.) If you need other arrangements, please contact me directly.

Volunteers to demonstrate calligraphy are being recruited for 3-hour shifts throughout the Fair. This is wonderfully received by the public and we’ve been able to award several student scholarships to AOCC and a teacher grant from the donated funds. All volunteers receive free admission for themselves and a helper with a parking pass. Please contact me by phone or email if you’d like to help. Volunteers are also needed to host the exhibit area during all shifts. We’d love to see you (and your work!) at the 2008 Oregon State Fair.

PSC Bus Tour: Saint Johns Bible Exhibit

Reserve your space now!

The Portland Society for Calligraphy invites you join them August 12 for a bus tour to the Tacoma Art Museum to experience Illuminating the Word: The Saint John's Bible.

Illuminating the The Word: The Saint John's Bible presents the only handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned since the advent of the printing press more than 500 years ago. The Saint John's Bible is a contemporary work created in the tradition of handwritten medieval manuscripts. The artistic director of the project, Donald Jackson, calligrapher to Queen Elizabeth II, is one of the world's foremost calligraphers. He worked with scribes and artists to write and illuminate The Saint John's Bible using quills and paints hand-ground from precious minerals and stones, as did scribes during medieval times.

This exhibit includes 44 spreads of the Gospels and Acts, Pentateuch, Psalms.

The $41 fee includes round-trip transportation, admission to the Tacoma Art Museum and a special private lecturer/slide show.

MTR Western will provide us with a deluxe motorcoach which will allow us to travel at ease with the necessary comforts just steps away.

We are fortunate to have Suzanne Moore, artist, calligrapher and contributor to the Saint John's Bible provide a slide lecture, Illuminating the Word: A Painter's Perspective. One of just three American artists who are part of a Wales-based team illuminating The Saint John's Bible, Suzanne Moore of Vashon Island discusses the process of working with an international team of artists and the techniques she uses to create her illuminations.

Schedule:

First come, first served, but please do not arrive before 1 p.m. and no phone calls prior to the event

Maggie Rogers says, "At the last PSC meeting we viewed the new DVD, Peter Waters: Master Book Binder in which Sheila Waters traces 'her late husband Peter's development as a binder prior to his worldwide leadership in library conservation, from 1940's art school prodigy to 1960's masterful designer-bookbinder, discussing their unique 50 year collaborative relationship and showing many of Peter's bindings from her private collectiion.' She also includes his involvement in book and incunabula restoration after the flooding of Florence, Italy, which led to his additional career as conservator at the Library of Congress. A fascinating and beautifully photographed tale, not to be missed. The DVD is available for $30 from Sheila Waters, at 851 Boyle Road, Fairfield, PA 17320-9340 -- a splendid offering to teach with, as well as simply to view over and over."
