Annual Open Show 2011

Calligraphy 2011, the PSC non-juried annual member exhibit, was a success! The show was held March 1-25 in the Streff Gallery at Schoen Library on the beautiful Marylhurst University Campus. Over 40 attended the Artists’ Reception on Sunday March 6.

A total of 29 member calligraphers submitted 43 pieces to the show. The media were varied: watercolor, acrylic, inks, graphite, handmade paper, illustrations, books and other structures. Five pieces sold. Our guest book was filled with many positive comments. Thanks to all of you who contributed your pieces and time to make the show successful.

PSC is proud to announce the winners of the "People's Choice Award." The 63 votes cast by attendees to the exhibit resulted in a tie of seven votes each to two pieces:

  • Jan Skopil’s "Gregg Shorthand," homage to the Shorthand writing method, done with gouache, sumi ink and Mitchell nibs on Fabriano Roma paper.

  • Jacqui Koch’s "Words Both True & Kind," a quote from Buddah. One side is "sink art," done with automatic pen and sumi ink on Arches Textwove paper. The circle on the other side is Golden's Quinacrindone Gold with Golden's crackle and Lumiere gold paint.

Thanks to Co-Chairs Marianne Nelson and Angelina Cox for organizing the show and bringing all the details together. Special thanks to those who shared their time and expertise to hang the artwork: Carol DuBosch, Diane Flack, Judy Large, Meri Taylor, and Bev Wittkopp.

Updated July 18, 2011: PSC is honored to have an article about the show in the current issue of "Bound and Lettered," published by John Neal, Bookseller. Thanks to Carol DuBosch, Meri Taylor and Marianne Nelson for taking pictures of works in the exhibit. Marianne submitted 17 photos, 9 of which were published. Calligraphers whose work is featured are Meri Taylor, Jacqueline Koch, Connie McConnell, Carol DuBosch, Elaine Young, Donya Wyffles, and Jan Skopil.
