February 2010

Don't forget: membership renewals due!

08 Monday • 7-8:30 p.m. • PSC Monthly Meeting • Calvin Hall at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church • Topic: Envelope Art! Join us for the fun as Carol DuBosch presents the many possibilities for using your art to make unique envelopes for your everyday mail! We all love to see our name "in lights," and creatively addressing envelopes to friends and family is a great way to let them shine and know they are special. Carol will discuss simple techniques to make your mail a piece of art and share her large collection of decorated envelopes. In addition, she will bring a library of resources for "Envelope Art" ideas, also letting you peek at her many boxes of vintage postage stamps. Vintage postage can be an excellent design element for envelopes as well as quick visual inspiration for layout ideas. She will also demonstrate how to make simple envelopes from unique paper, and share patterns. Carol regularly enters and wins awards in the annual Graceful Envelope Contest, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Washington D.C. Calligraphers Guild. She will bring her layouts and the copies of her winning entries, along with her new 2010 entry.

Top Ten Reasons for Lettering Envelopes
1. You never have to decide what to write (names & addresses are a given).
2. Nobody will be offended by your choice of words.
3. Choosing the right paper isn't a problem - commercial envelopes are just fine.
4. Only knowing one letter style is not a problem.
5. You have a practical place to try out new "hands."
6. You can quickly get your efforts out of view - pop them in the mail.
...for 7, 8, 9, 10 and MORE join us for Carol DuBosch's presentation of "Envelope Art"!

14 Monday • 7-8:30 p.m. • PSC Monthly Meeting • Calvin Hall at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church • Tim Leigh will present "Tim's Top Ten Tips for Left Handed Writers." He is a talented writer and story teller as well as an excellent craft's person who makes his own brand of folded metal pens with custom wood handles, truly a work in art themselves. Tim will regale us with the stories of his writing experience which is applicable to all calligraphers, right and left handers. Tim will demo his wonderful pens as well as show his meticulous class binders and examples of his work. You will be inspired! Also be ready to test drive Tim's amazing folded pens. Come try your hand with a unique pen used by a variety of artists!

Tim writes: "Time was, responsible calligraphy instructors culled left-handed students from their classes and sent them home with the admonition "your handicap will impede success here, so you'd best find another pursuit." These days, that's less the case, so when Tim Leigh reported to Rebecca Wild some years ago for tutoring in letters, he was encouraged to "find his way." Which turned into an odyssey of sorts through smeared forms, backward strokes, paper twists, flourishes that began where they should end, and discovery of the utility of heat guns. Since then, Tim has been schooled further by Rebecca, Colleen Cavin, Carol DuBosch and Thomas Hoyer. And the letters he makes, while not perfect, give hope to those who write from the other side. Come see how it works. Tim will discuss and demonstrate left-handed writing, show the class journals he painstakingly makes and keeps, provide a close-up at the folded metal pens he crafts, and show a few samples of completed work. A caveat: There are no guarantees other than the presentation will be interesting. After all, Tim is still just a student."
