2&3 Friday & Saturday • Letters of Joy • Seattle • Registration begins in March • We are pleased to announce the 26th Annual Conference of the Write On Calligraphers to be held at Edmonds Community College in Edmonds, WA. Our Keynote Speaker will be renowned calligrapher, painter, and printmaker Louise Grunewald. Each year over 20 experienced instructors teach a wide variety of classes, including calligraphy hands and paper-oriented arts.

Broadway Street Estacada, Oregon • Father Robert Guiseppi Palladino, nationally known calligrapher, priest and former Reed College professor, will be featured throughout the month of July. The show's opening gala, with an opportunity to meet and talk with the artist, will be July 11.

12 Tuesday • 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. • The Portland Society for Calligraphy invites you to join them August 12 for a bus tour to the Tacoma Art Museum to experience Illuminating the Word: The Saint John's Bible. This tour features a lecture by participant & artist Suzanne Moore.

August 22 - September 01 •  All-Oregon Art Annual Exhibit • Volunteers to demonstrate calligraphy are being recruited for 3-hour shifts throughout the Fair. This is wonderfully received by the public and we've been able to award several student scholarships to AOCC and a teacher grant from the donated funds. All volunteers receive free admission for themselves and a helper with a parking pass. Please contact Calligraphy Coordinator Trish Hibbler if you’d like to help. Volunteers are also needed to host the exhibit area during all shifts.

31 Sunday • 5:30-7:30 a.m. • Portland Triathalon • Waterfront Park • Here is your opportunity to join the body writing party at the Portland Triathlon Sunday, August 31 at 5:30 am (no, this is not a typo!). Hope you've heard the tales of last year's adventures in writing beautiful numbers on wonderful firm skin. Each triathlon participant is required to have their race number and age written on leg and arm and we've been asked to participate again. Please contact Meri to join the fun!

12 Friday • 7-9 p.m. • PSC Monthly Meeting (please note date for this meeting is different than usual) • Guest speaker: Martin Jackson • St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church

12: Guest speaker and noted calligrapher Martin Jackson joins us for a rare glimpse of old manuscripts: "I have various old manuscripts, mostly from around 1650, not of any great monetary value, but of great value to me as a calligrapher because it allows me to see things close up, and to hold them and to see them with their imperfections etc. I also have a copy of a 16th century book of sample styles by the calligrapher Theodore Boissens, printed in Amsterdam around 1600, and various pages from another calligraphy sample book printed in 1594, including pages by Van den Velde, Hondius, Henrix and others. There are also other original printed pages from George Bickhams book 'The Universal Penman' etc etc. After a very short introduction I want to invite everyone to handle (with care of course) all these pieces, it is an opportunity to 'get up close', smell them, check the pen work, feel the vellum, see the errors etc."
