12: Guest speaker and noted calligrapher Martin Jackson joins
us for a rare glimpse of old manuscripts: "I have various
old manuscripts, mostly from around 1650, not of any great monetary
value, but of great value to me as a calligrapher because it allows
me to see things close up, and to hold them and to see them with
their imperfections etc. I also have a copy of a 16th century book
of sample styles by the calligrapher Theodore Boissens, printed
in Amsterdam around 1600, and various pages from another calligraphy
sample book printed in 1594, including pages by Van den Velde,
Hondius, Henrix and others. There are also other original printed
pages from George Bickhams book 'The Universal Penman' etc etc.
After a very short introduction I want to invite everyone to handle
(with care of course) all these pieces, it is an opportunity to
'get up close', smell them, check the pen work, feel the vellum,
see the errors etc."
