The Portland Society for Calligraphy will host the All Oregon Calligraphers Conference at Portland Community College, Rock Creek Campus. Anyone interested in calligraphy is welcome; you do not need to be a member of an Oregon guild to attend. This all-day event will feature keynote speaker Denis Brown from Dublin, Ireland.

denis scribes"Dangerous Lines! Calligraphy with Attitude" will be a presentation of both traditional and expressive calligraphy by a modern master. Exploding from years of traditional studies of historical manuscripts and his native Celtic Art, Denis Brown's work takes a contemporary art approach to communication through text. He will discuss a range of recent works, showing first the continuing influence of Celtic traditions; then developing into painterly modern work still using the ancient materials of vellum, gold and pigments; and finally into his unique 3D layered works in glass. This multimedia presentation will include a "sneak preview" video clip from his DVD master class in italic techniques.

Denis Brown's work stems from ancient traditions of manuscript writing, and he has engaged with these since his early teens. Rigorous formal training in traditional calligraphy at London's Roehampton Institute has formed a strong foundation for later experimental work. His work explodes from and extends traditions of calligraphy in the form of innovative works of art. Widely travelled with his work, he has won awards and commissions on four continents, and is internationally recognised as a world leader in the field of Letter Arts.

The Portland Society for Calligraphy is excited to bring Denis Brown to the 25th annual All Oregon Calligraphers Conference. We hope many of you will join us for an action-packed day. There is a full schedule and even if you can't attend we hope you will take part in our 4"x4" Exhibit. Hope to see you in October!
